Serendipity is a term that really describes the INTERNET. It is full of great
places to explore and wonderful things to discover. Like prospecting for gold
the best stuff is often found in the least likely places.
My wife Diane and I have been collecting Public Domain files from Amiga BBSs
all over the country to use in our PD disk business. This last summer we
discovered a POP (point of presence) here in Fresno and now we are also on the
INTERNET. We are still very much at the lower end of the learning curve.
Amiga Internet Nuggets is our effort to share some of our discoveries with
other Amiga users.
AIN_95A.lha contains:
-READ-ME-FIRST.txt (this file)

Earlybird steps:
a. Get into your own directory on your local server by entering the
Internet area. On CRIS this is a menu selection.
b. You need to create a file transfer sub-directory.
Just enter the following:
md XFR [ This will create a sub-directory called XFR ]
c. Please note that CASE is as important as spelling on the Internet.
There are many times that you may see a file like: UUuuu.UuuU
d. Use Pine to create the .mailrc sub-directory. enter the following:
pine
n [ to question do you want to receive ..... ]
q [ to question do you want to.... or q to quit ]
y [ to question do you really want ot quit pine? ]
then type in the following to delete the two pine sub-directories
unless you want to use pine as your mail reader.
rm .pine* [ this removes all .pine(anything) stuff. ]
e. Now create the .newsrc file with ALL newsgroups in it.
WARNING!!! do not do anything that uses THIS .newsrc as it
contains over 5000 newsgroups!!!!! [ ~150k ]
Just type in the following:
newsetup
f. Your terminal should be set to auto-DL and Zmodem.
Now to download the .newsrc file just type in the following:
sz -b -w 2048 .newsrc [ the file should auto download ]
IF you want to edit the .newsrc file and re-upload it you can.
--------- Don't you just love a multitasking Amiga! ---------
Edit the file leaving only a few newsgroups. [ you will get one
or two weeks worth of messages for each ] the character at the end
of each line makes it active [:] or inactive [!] then upload that
edited .newsrc file by entering the following:
rz -b -w 2048 [ then use your terminal program to upload .newsrc ]
g. Now creck your handywork by entering the following:
dir |more
you will get a directory listing which should include the following:
.newsrc
.mailrc
.XFR
Sample session steps:
Note: this session needs your terminal program to be set for AUTO
downloading of files using the Zmodem protocall. Also CASE is
Very important when typing. usually all lower case is used, BUT
watch for exceptions! Local refers to your service providers
Internet site. Remote is any other Internet site you visit while
you are still logged into your local site.
login process (on CRIS)
check for e-mail (CRIS menu selection)
get into Internet (CRIS menu selection)
view YOUR directory contents (dir |more)
capture latest NewsGroups for offline reading (uqwk -n +L -m)
[ I.E. +n = get newsgroups, <Uppercase> +L = SOUP format, -m = no-mail. ]
[ the SOUP format is what we use to read OffLine messages ]
[ Offline Orbit is the best SOUP offlie reader right now ]
view the contents of the ZIP online instruction manual (man zip)
compress newsgroup files into one ZIP file (zip z.ng.zip *.MSG AREAS)
download zipped file to your Amiga. (sz -b -w 2048 *.zip)
[ terminal program in auto d/l ]
delete the newsgroup files (rm *.MSG AREAS)
delete the zipped files (rm *.zip)
telnet to a remote ARCHIE site (telnet ?????)
do archie setup (set ????)
do search for sites that contain file name you want (find dcdd)
[ write down the site you want to get the file from ]
leave the Archie site (bye)
get ready to ftp (NCftp on CRIS)
[explain Anonomous Site login courtises]
wake up the remote site (open ????)
View directories you pass through as you move down to file desired
(cd ????) (dir |more)
make XFR your current directory at your local site. (lcd XFR)
set up to transfer binary files (bin)
move the file from the remote site to your local site (get DCDD23.lha)
[ if you want multi wild card selected files use: mget ]
close the remote site (close)
close FTP (exit)
move to the XFR sub-directory in YOUR directory (cd XFR)
display the contents of your XFR sub-directory (dir |more)
download the contents of XFR to your Amiga (sz -b -w 2048 *)
[ term program must be in auto d/l - Zmodem ]
delete all files in XFR (rm *)
[ you could also use del * and be asked "delete Y/N? " for each file ]
logoff your service (CRIS menu selection)
This is not the only way to do all this, but "it works for me!", and
lets us use AREXX scripts to automate most of the process.
